Web Browser Compatibility

Main City Web Site

The Internet has changed significantly over the last ten years. Probably most dramatic has been the change in content. The Internet today has rich interactive content that includes streaming video and features that allow content to be manipulated in real-time. Very old web browsers are not always capable of displaying these new features.  To ensure that you can receive the full experience of the City site we support the following web browsers and versions.

·         Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0+

·         Mozilla Firefox 3.0+

·         Google Chrome 4.0+

·         Safari 3.0+

·         Opera 9.0+

Many companies, such as Google, have already stopped supporting old browsers such as Internet Explorer version 6. The City will be phasing out its support for Internet Explorer 6 and browsers older than the ones listed above.

By December 1, 2010, Google Translate will be installed on City web pages. Google Translate will allow the real-time translation of the City pages into Spanish. It is important to note that not all web pages and documents will be Translate enabled.

The Google Translate link can be found in the top-right of the page.

If you visit the site using Internet Explorer 6, the Google Translate feature will not be available to you. If you are using an older web browser, such as Internet Explorer 6, we strongly urge you to upgrade so that you can access all of the City web site features now and well into the future.

Not all supported web browsers will access all City web applications. In an effort to deliver a wide variety of services via the web site, the City selects vendors that provide web services related to the applications they support. Though the City makes an effort to ensure that these web applications work on the widest range of web browsers, it is not always possible to support every browser. When a City web application supports other than the browsers listed above, the entry page to the application will let the visitor know which browsers are supported.

If you find a discrepancy, please let us know by reporting it. Click here to report a web browser incompatibility.

Please follow this link if you would like to learn more about Google Translate.

City Web Applications

Not all City web applications will be compatible with all browsers. Where this is the case, every effort is made to let you know of the specific limitation when you enter the application. Examples of some City web applications with known limited web browser compatibility are (this list is not exhaustive):

·         City Meetings Online - Streaming video of City Council Meetings and City TV-18 programming

·         eRecreation - Activity Signup and Facility Information

·         LDT Records Archive - Land Development Team Records Archives are mostly PDF, however there are some file in .TIFF format

·         SB Maps, City Of Santa Barbara Online Map – This application utilizes an ActiveX browser add-in and is therefore only compatible with Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or newer.

Mac OS/9 File Name Compatibility

Apple Macintosh OS/9 has a limitation of thirty-two (32) characters for a File Name. Because of the need to be precise with the naming of some linked files, such as Microsoft Office documents and Adobe Acrobat PDFs, you will find some of these documents throughout the site have file names longer than 32 characters. If you are using OS/9, and are experiencing problems accessing specific files, please let us know which document you are trying to access, and it will be emailed as an attachment to you. Click here to request a file be sent to you.
