RECREATION PROGRAM LEADER (A-OK) | $13.00/HR | Staff will plan and implement curriculum for the after-school sports classes for boys and girls ages 6 – 12 years; consider the developmental needs and interests of each age level when planning; provide for the learning of a variety of skills; be a positive role model for boys and girls; encourage; challenge and support boys and girls as they experience a wide variety of opportunities; and create a positive environment for learning and enrichment with the goal of 100% participation. Bachelor’s degree preferred or the equivalent of at least 12 semester units in early childhood education, elementary education, early childhood development, psychology, sports and recreation, or sociology. Experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. A minimum of 2 years working experience with children. Ability to work with a variety of people to facilitate cooperative work. Fingerprints, child abuse index, health screening and TB test as well as certifications in CPR and First Aid will be necessary prior to working in A-OK. Monday – Friday, 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., on scheduled school days for academic year starting January 2012. Hours may vary according to need. REFERENCE PAGE II | $8.50/HR | The current opening is at the downtown Central Library. Job duties vary but may include: sorting and shelving library materials and files; maintaining orderly materials collections; basic processing of library materials (e.g., applying tape, labels, covers, security devices and pockets); helping in minor program preparation and clean-up; responding to questions from public by directing them to proper source for assistance; counting U.S. currency; preparing mail and material for postage or delivery; pick up and distributing U.S. and interoffice mail and correspondence; driving a City vehicle and performing errands and deliveries; emptying library book drops; also may be required to answer phone or check out/check in library materials or to give very basic assistance to public. Excellent customer service skills and attention to detail are required. This position also requires: the physical stamina and strength sufficient to move loaded book carts and lift book bags and packages weighing up to 40 pounds; bending, lifting and stretching, ability to stand for an extended period of time; accuracy in shelving and sorting in alphabetical or decimal number order, and in counting coins and bills. A valid California Driver License is desirable. This position is 16 hours/week; Tuesday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM. SKATEBOARD CLINIC DIRECTOR | $14.00 – 16.00/HR | The Skateboard Clinic Director oversees the operation of winter, spring and summer skateboarding clinics for the Parks and Recreation Department. The director oversees staff and Junior Counselors that assist the director with skate lessons to participants. The director must be experienced working with children and incorporate fun activities while teaching skateboarding skills and tricks. Skateboard Clinic headquarters is at Skater’s Point Park located on the beach at Cabrillo and Garden Streets. Clinic hours are 8:30-11:30 AM for skaters 7-11 years and from 8:30 – 10:00 and 10:15 – 11:30 Monday through Fridays for Little Shredders ages 4-6. UTILITY WORKER I | $14.97/HR | The current opening is an entry-level position in the Water Distribution section. Candidates may have limited or no directly-related work experience. Example of duties: Under general supervision, perform a variety of duties and tasks related to the operation, installation, construction and maintenance of complex water distribution and recycled water systems. Duties include assisting with water system flushing, fire hydrant maintenance, water meter replacements, emergency response for water and recycled water facilities. Must be able to tactfully interface with the public, follow directions with safe work practices and in regard to protecting the City’s drinking water quality, and be available for stand-by duties that include being on-call after hours and responding to emergency problems at any hour.
