Police Explorer Testing Process

Once your application has been received, it will be held in our files until the next testing date. Testing is held bi-yearly, more often depending on demand. You will be notified of the date via mail or phone call. Testing is usually held at Santa Barbara Junior High School. The test will normally be on a Saturday, beginning in the morning. Depending on the number of applicants, the process can go well into the afternoon. Lunch will be provided. You should wear work out type clothing appropriate for the physical agility test. This clothing will be acceptable for the entire testing process.

Written Test
The testing will begin with a 50 question multiple choice written test. You will have a maximum of 30 minutes to answer mathematics, reading and writing questions. If you successfully complete this test with no less than a score of 70% you will advance to the...

Physical Agility Test
Here you will be required to run ½ mile within 5 minutes, complete 5 push-ups within 30 seconds, complete 10 stomach crunches within 30 seconds, and an obstacle course within one minute. If you successfully complete the physical agility test you will advance to the...

Oral Board
The oral board consists of a panel of Explorers and Police Officer Advisors who will ask you questions identifying your qualifications for the position.

Background Check
If you successfully complete the entire testing process, the final phase is a background investigation conducted by Police Officer Advisors.

Your parents are welcome to accompany you during the testing process, though they will not be able to sit in on the oral board. If you unsuccessfully complete any portion of the testing we will discuss with you areas for improvement, and you will be welcome to test again within three to six months depending on your overall test score.
For participants under age 18 you must have your parents review and sign the release form that is included in your testing letter, which authorizes your participation in the testing process. Without this release you can not test for the Explorer program. Regardless of your age you must review the “Reasons for Rejection” and sign the “Waiver” section. You must bring this signed form with you to the testing process otherwise you will not be aloud to participate in the tests.
