Alternative Transportation

This program promotes, supports, and develops alternative forms of transportation as directed by the Circulation Element of the General Plan. Through the re-organization of Public Works and use of the transportation policy, the Alternative Transportation program will conceive and initiate projects, develop a process for community input and decision-maker review, and be a liaison to other Public Works Divisions and the Land Development Team. The program also manages existing programs such as Sidewalk Missing Links, Hitching Post and Bike Locker installations, Neighborhood Traffic Management, and the dissemination of transportation information to businesses and special interest groups. The program works with other Public Works Department Programs to provide leadership and guidance for transportation related expenditures.

·     Funds the construction of new or improved pedestrian facilities;

·     Funds the construction of new facilities serving various alternative transportation modes;

·     Funds the operation of energy efficient/non-polluting electric shuttle buses;

·     Develops funding programs for Transit Capitol and operating assistance;

·     Subsidizes the operation of various transit assistance programs;

·     Plans auto-related, non-auto, and auto alternative improvements to the City’s transportation system consistent with policy’s of the Circulation Element, Bicycle Master Plan, and others.

·     Works with Community Development to implement the Circulation Element;

·     Works with neighborhoods and other Public Works Divisions to develop Neighborhood Traffic Management Programs and Projects.
