BulletPark and Recreation Commission
In May 1929 the Recreation Commission was established by City Council on the recommendation of the Board of Park Commissioners, who felt that City parks would be more frequently used if recreational facilities were included in the parks. Recreation facilities and programs are now administered by the Recreation Department, and include adult sports, youth sports and social activities, aquatics, cultural arts, senior citizen activities, and special activities for the disabled.

BulletPlanning Commission
The development of the City Planning Commission, formed in 1923, was mainly an outgrowth of the activities of the Plans and Planting Committee, a citizens group. The 1925 earthquake destroyed many structures, and the extensive rebuilding that followed offered the Commission a fresh opportunity for instituting a planning process for the future growth of the City.

BulletRental Housing Mediation Task Force
The Rental Housing Mediation Task Force was established by the former Community Relations Commission in February 1976 and was staffed by volunteers. In 1978-79 the City began using Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for staffing the Task Force, and it is now staffed by two community services employees.

BulletSign Committee
The City of Santa Barbara has long recognized that signs are an integral part of the cityscape and, as such, can detract from or enhance the City's image and character. The City first adopted a sign ordinance in 1922, and many changes in sign review have occurred since that time. In 1960, the Architectural Board of Review (ABR) began reviewing certain types of signs.

BulletSingle Family Design Board
The Single Family Design Board was created in 2007, by Santa Barbara Municipal Code Chapter 22.69.010 to promote the general welfare, protect and preserve the City’s natural and historical charm, and enhance the City’s aesthetic appeal and beauty.

BulletSister Cities Board
In June, 1973, the City Council established an advisory group to oversee and coordinate the activities of Santa Barbara's Sister City Program. The Sister City Program is part of the People-to-People Program initiated by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1956 to promote friendship among people regardless of race, color or creed.

BulletTransportation and Circulation Committee
The Transportation and Circulation Committee was formed in 1999 by Resolution No. 99-031 on the recommendation of the Circulation Element Implementation Committee. Its purpose is to advise City Council and the Planning Commission on transportation issues, including the Circulation Element to the City General Plan, and various issues dealing with alternate transportation strategies.

BulletWater Commission
The City Council created a City Water Commission headed by Eugene Sheffield in 1900 to administer water services.

BulletWestside Center Advisory Committee
The Westside Community Center was opened at 423 West Victoria Street in 1980-81 in response to the need for a community service facility and neighborhood center for the Westside and West Downtown targeted areas.
