   Building and Fire Code Board of Appeals

The Building and Fire Code Board of Appeals was established in 1983 to interpret the provisions of the Building and Fire Codes, including the suitability of alternate materials. Before the establishment of this Board, such appeals were heard by the Architectural Board of Review.

General Functions

  • Hear any appeal of decisions rendered by the Chief of Building and Zoning in the enforcement of all Uniform Building Codes.
  • Hear any appeal of decisions rendered by the Fire Chief in the enforcement of the Uniform Fire Code.

Membership
A panel of 8 members appointed by City Council, 5 of whom serve at any one appeal. These 5 are selected by the Community Development Director and Fire Chief according to the nature of the appeal and the expertise of the members selected.  

Qualifications

  • Resident of the City or the adjoining unincorporated area of Santa Barbara County.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and expertise in specialty areas governed by the construction and fire codes of the City.
  • May not hold any full-time paid office or employment in City government.

Length of Term
Open.

Meeting Schedule
The Board only meets when needed to hear an appeal; only 5 members serve at any one appeal.

Time Involved
Approximately 2 – 3 meetings per year; 10 – 12 hours per year.

Financial Disclosure Requirement
Members must file a Statement of Economic Interests upon appointment, annually and when leaving the advisory group.
